Padres lock in Bell for one year, $4M

Closer Heath Bell says he and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $4 million, one-year contract to avoid salary arbitration.

Bell led the NL with 42 saves last year, when he took over as closer after Trevor Hoffman signed a free-agent deal with Milwaukee.

Bell says the talks with the Padres went quickly. He wants to pitch well again this year to earn a long-term contract.
