Orioles' Machado chimes in on Carlos Correa's ascent through Astros' system

Published May. 28, 2015 1:59 a.m. ET

Baltimore Orioles star Manny Machado is just 22 years old, so he knows a thing or two about moving through the ranks of a minor league system.

In 2012, Machado was promoted straight from Double-A to the Orioles, skipping the Triple-A level due to his eye-popping numbers.

Within that context, he's a good person to ask about the progress of Houston Astros super-prospect Carlos Correa. The Astros recently promoted Correa to Triple-A, where he's already hitting home runs completely out of stadiums and off buildings across the street

So when does Machado think the Astros should make the call and promote Correa to the bigs? He shared some thoughts on that topic with Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle

“Hey, I mean, let the kid play. The only way you’re going to get better is by playing at the level that you need to be playing. I bet you he’s going to be a big leaguer, no question about it. See what he could do up here."

Despite Machado's 'why not?' attitude, general manager Jeff Luhnow has a more measured (and, perhaps, on-point) approach:

"We feel like Carlos has a chance to help this team this year. But he’s not at that point right now. There’s no guarantee that he’s going to help us more than the guys we have right now, at this point. Now it could become more obvious as the summer moves on.”

If Correa keeps hitting like he is, though, the Astros might be forced to give him the green light soon.
