Orioles' closer on DL with shoulder strain

Published Apr. 14, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The Baltimore Orioles have placed struggling closer Mike Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder.

The move announced Wednesday is retroactive to April 10.

Gonzalez notified manager Dave Trembley on Tuesday night that he wasn't available to pitch against Tampa Bay because he couldn't get his shoulder loose in the bullpen. Gonzalez was examined by a doctor Wednesday and then placed on the DL.

Gonzalez has blown two saves in three tries, and in his only converted opportunity he loaded the bases before getting the final out. The left-hander is 0-2 with an 18.00 ERA and has allowed five hits and four walks in only two innings.

He was signed as a free agent in December.
