Nats RHP Marquis expecting elbow surgery

Published May. 12, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

Washington Nationals pitcher Jason Marquis thinks there's a good chance he needs surgery on his injured right elbow.

Marquis made a rehab start for Class-A Potomac on Tuesday night and said his elbow stiffened after he woke up Wednesday morning. He says there's a "strong possibility'' he'll have surgery to clean out bone chips, which he estimates would probably sideline him until August.

The right-hander joined Washington as a free agent in the offseason, signing a $15 million, two-year contract after going 15-13 with a 4.04 ERA for Colorado last season.

He went 0-3 with a 20.52 ERA in three starts for the Nationals before going on the 15-day disabled list last month with inflammation in his elbow caused by bone chips.
