WASHINGTON (AP) Injured Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy won't say whether he'll be ready for Game 1 of the NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, although he did think he took ''a step in the right direction'' on Wednesday.

Murphy worked out with his teammates, taking live batting practice and regular BP, taking grounders, then running the bases.

Afterward, he said he ''felt really good.''

Washington manager Dusty Baker's assessment: ''He's looking better every day. He's moving around with more confidence.''

Murphy hasn't started a game for the NL East champion Nationals since Sept. 17, missing time with a strained muscle in his buttocks. Since then, he is 0 for 3 as a pinch hitter.

Murphy was the Nationals' best batter all season. He hit .347 with 25 homers, 47 doubles and 104 RBIs, all team highs.
