Major League Baseball is creating a new department to oversee player development.

MLB announced Friday that Jimmie Lee Solomon will lead the division. He had been executive vice president of baseball operations.

He'll manage baseball academies in Compton, Calif., Houston and San Juan, Puerto Rico, and develop future sites. He'll also be responsible for minor league operations, the Civil Rights Game and Futures Game.

Executive vice president of administration John McHale will serve as interim head of baseball operations. Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, who had been a special assistant to the commissioner, will become senior vice president of major league operations. His duties will include international operations, umpiring and security.
