Mets' Beltran clears waivers

Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran cleared trade waivers on Monday, major-league sources told FOXSports.com.

The Mets are now technically able to trade Beltran, just as they were prior to the July 31 non-waiver deadline. However, it seems very doubtful that Beltran, who has a full no-trade clause, will change teams before the end of this season.

Beltran is batting just .195 and was not in the Mets’ lineup on Tuesday night against Colorado ace Ubaldo Jimenez. Based on Beltran’s performance this season, it’s hard to imagine that any team would be eager to take on a substantial portion of his $18.5 million salary for next year.

Beltran, 33, didn’t play this season until June 15, because it took several months for him to recover from January knee surgery. At the time, Mets officials said that Beltran did not have their full approval to go ahead with the operation. His agent, Scott Boras, said that he did.

Beltran has hit just one home run in 22 games this year. The Mets are 6-14 with him in the starting lineup.

Angel Pagan played well in center field while Beltran was out. Since Beltran’s return, Pagan has started frequently in the outfield corners.
