Mauer's agent at Twins camp again

Published Mar. 5, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

The Twins’ negotiations with Joe Mauer appear to be gaining momentum.

Mauer’s agent, Ron Shapiro, visited the Twins’ spring-training home in Ft. Myers, Fl., for the second straight day Friday, the strongest indication yet that constructive talks are talking place.

Several media outlets noted Shapiro’s initial appearance in Ft. Myers on Thursday. His arrival, however, was not necessarily a sign of progress; Shapiro visits Mauer every spring.

The extended stay by Shapiro, however, almost certainly means that the sides are engaging in deeper discussions.

Mauer, who turns 27 on April 19, is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. His talks with the Twins have been free of rancor, and are expected to conclude with him signing a contract of at least seven years and $20 million per season.
