Marlins CF Bonifacio out with sprained thumb

Published May. 19, 2012 4:56 p.m. ET

Miami Marlins center fielder Emilio Bonifacio, who leads the majors in stolen bases, could be headed for the disabled list because of a sprained left thumb.

Bonifacio is out of the lineup for Saturday's game at Cleveland. An MRI on Saturday revealed the sprain. Manager Ozzie Guillen says going on the DL is a possibility, but adds Indians doctors said Bonifacio won't need surgery.

Guillen said Bonifacio will be examined by Marlins doctors when the team returns home to open a series against Colorado on Monday.

Bonifacio, who has stolen 20 bases, jammed his hand on a dive back to first base Friday. He then was thrown out by catcher Carlos Santana, the first time Bonifacio has been caught stealing this season.
