Mariners take a flier on veteran reliever Kevin Gregg

The Seattle Mariners took a flier on 36-year-old relief pitcher Kevin Gregg, signing him to a minor-league contract as reported by Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times on Twitter

Gregg, who is in his 13th season, was released by the Cincinnati Reds last week after having a rough first month with Cincy in 2015.

Over the course of his career, Gregg has racked up 177 saves. He was a marquee closer in the league from 2007-2010, picking up a career-high 37 saves with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2010 before injuries and ineffectiveness took their toll.

Should he perform well at Triple-A Tacoma, it doesn't seem far-fetched to see Gregg in a Mariners uniform this season, especially if there are any injuries to key right-handed relievers in the M's bullpen.

However, Gregg is anything but a 'sure thing', considering his time with the Reds this season (allowing 13 hits and 12 runs in 11 appearances), and he's coming off an elbow injury that required surgery and limited him to just 12 games in 2014 with the Miami Marlins.
