Mariners place SS Wilson on DL

Seattle Mariners starting shortstop Jack Wilson will miss at least six weeks and likely the rest of the season after being scheduled for surgery on Wednesday to repair his broken right hand.

A team spokesman confirmed the surgery and estimated the recovery time following Monday night's 3-1 win over Oakland.

Hours earlier, Seattle placed Wilson on the 15-day disabled list and selected veteran infielder Chris Woodward from Triple-A Tacoma.

Those moves came after the Mariners fired manager Don Wakamatsu and three coaches.

Wilson broke the fifth metacarpal of his right hand at home early Sunday morning. The team said he slipped and fell in his bathroom, hitting his hand on the floor.

Wilson, who came over in a trade with Pittsburgh last year, is batting .249 in 61 games.

The 34-year-old Woodward was hitting .232 in 103 games at Triple-A. He is a veteran of 10 major league seasons and appeared in 20 games for Seattle last year.
