Mariners' Cruz leaves with back spasms

Published Jun. 9, 2015 9:17 p.m. ET

CLEVELAND (AP) Seattle Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz, who leads the American League with 18 home runs, was removed from Tuesday's game against Cleveland with back spasms.

Cruz fouled off a pitch from Corey Kluber in the fifth inning. Manager Lloyd McClendon and a Mariners trainer came on the field, and Cruz walked to the dugout after a brief discussion.

Cruz is batting .326 with 39 RBIs in 58 games. He was replaced during the at-bat by Dustin Ackley, who also took over in the outfield.
