Manager Bob Melvin adds Chip Hale as bench coach

Published Oct. 5, 2011 5:08 p.m. ET

Oakland manager Bob Melvin is reuniting with Chip Hale, hiring him as bench coach for the Athletics.

The A's said Wednesday that Hale is receiving a two-year contract to work under Melvin. Hale, a Bay Area native, had been third base and infield coach for the New York Mets the past two seasons.

Hale worked in those same two jobs under Melvin with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2007-09, when the club won the NL West in '07. Hale replaces Joel Skinner, whose contract wasn't renewed last week.

A former major league infielder for parts of seven seasons, Hale worked seven seasons as a minor league manager in the Arizona organization.

The A's still have positions to fill at pitching coach, hitting coach and bullpen coach.
