Brewers manager Ken Macha says there's a chance career saves leader Trevor Hoffman can reclaim the closer's role over rookie John Axford.
Macha says he's not sure how the situation will play out, but that the 42-year-old Hoffman is throwing the ball well enough to return to the role.
There's still a large banner at Miller Park hanging out in center field that keeps track of Hoffman's career saves. It's been stuck on 596 since May 7. Hoffman pitched poorly after that and lost the closer's role to Axford, who has converted all four of his chances.
Hoffman has made five straight scoreless appearances dating back to June 3. Hoffman is 2-4 with five saves and five blown opportunities with an ERA at 9.00 in 23 appearances.
