Longoria out with strained left quad

Published Sep. 24, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

Tampa Bay All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria will miss a three-game weekend series against Seattle due to a left quadriceps strain.

Rays manager Joe Maddon made the announcement before Friday night's game with the Mariners. Maddon added that Longoria will be re-evaluated on Monday.

''Definitely not this weekend, but maybe by the middle of next week it might a reasonable time slot to get him back,'' Maddon said.

Longoria, hitting .294 with 22 homers and 104 RBIs in 151 games this season, was hurt making a defensive play in Thursday night's 10-3 win over the New York Yankees. He was examined by the team medical staff on Friday.

Sean Rodriguez replaced Longoria, making his first start of the year at third.

Tampa Bay started Friday with a magic number of four (any combination of Rays wins and Boston losses) to clinch the franchise's second-ever playoff berth. The Rays won the AL pennant in its initial postseason trip in 2008.
