GETTING STARTED

Rays left-hander Drew Smyly (shoulder tendinitis) is expected to throw off a mound. He played catch from 100 feet on Thursday. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said he wants Smyly to throw three or four times before being re-evaluated.

STILL HEALING

Pirates star center fielder Andrew McCutchen, out with lower-body discomfort, is not in Saturday's lineup. On Friday, he stayed back in Bradenton and took batting practice on the field for the first time since his issue was revealed.

PREPARING FOR OPENING DAY

David Price will make his first start since learning he will be the opening-day starter for the Detroit Tigers, ending Justin Verlander's run of seven straight. Price faces the Mets in Lakeland, Florida.

WAITING ON RYU

Dodgers lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu has not pitched for three days after receiving an inflammation-reducing injection in his left shoulder, and he will skip his next turn Sunday. Los Angeles will decide Saturday how to proceed, a decision that could jeopardize his readiness for opening day.
