LEADING OFF: Sale comes off DL; Verlander tests arm
A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:
---
SALE DAY
The White Sox are upbeat as ace Chris Sale returns from a broken right foot to make his season debut with Chicago going for a second straight win after dropping its first four. Minnesota's Phil Hughes (0-1) makes his 12th career start and 16th appearance against the White Sox.
ONE MORE TRY
Max Scherzer (0-1) tries again for his first win with the Nationals - in the series finale against the Phillies. The 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner who signed a $210 million contract with Washington in the offseason allowed three unearned runs in a loss on opening day. Scherzer is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two career starts vs. Philadelphia.
HOW FAST?
Masahiro Tanaka starts for the Yankees vs. Boston's Clay Buchholz Sunday night, and many will be watching the Japanese ace's velocity, which has been down in the low 90s. Tanaka lasted just four innings in an opening-day loss, and another poor start would surely fuel speculation that his damaged right elbow is a problem.
ACE ON THE SIDE
Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander (strained right triceps) will throw a 40-pitch bullpen session. The former AL Cy Young winner and MVP is on the disabled list for the first time in his 11-year career.
PROUD PAPA
Congratulations to Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano on the Friday birth of his fourth child, a daughter. Liriano went on paternity leave and will miss his scheduled turn through the rotation. Right-hander Casey Sadler was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to make his first big league start.
