Jays' Encarnacion out for rest of season

Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion needs surgery on his left wrist and will miss the remainder of the season.

All-Star left-hander Brett Cecil is also being shut down for the final 13 games with a sore elbow.

Encarnacion sat out four games last week with soreness in his wrist. He returned to play all three games of a weekend series against Baltimore, but had just one hit in 12 at-bats.

Encarnacion ranks third in the majors with 36 home runs this season, while his 104 RBIs are the fourth-highest total. He's batting .272 overall.

Manager John Gibbons said there is no structural damage to Encarnacion's wrist. The surgery, which will clean up scar tissue and repair damaged cartilage, requires about two months of recovery, meaning Encarnacion should be fully recovered before spring training.

A first-time All-Star this season, Cecil went 5-1 with a 2.82 ERA in 60 games. The five-year veteran struck out 70 batters in 60 2-3 innings while walking just 23.

Gibbons said Cecil has been dealing with soreness for about a month and is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the cause of the pain.
