The Cleveland Indians have signed shortstop Adam Everett to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.
Needing middle infield depth, the Indians will take a shot with the 33-year-old Everett, who has played 832 of his 846 major league games at shortstop. He has been with Houston, Minnesota and Detroit.
Everett spent the last two seasons with the Tigers, who released him after 31 games in 2010. Known more for his defense, he batted .238 with three homers and 44 RBIs in 118 games in 2009 while helping Detroit finish the regular season tied with Minnesota atop the AL Central.
Everett has a career fielding percentage of .976 with 85 errors in 3,558 chances. He had one error in 123 chances last season.
