Indians activate Hafner

Published Sep. 11, 2011 6:16 p.m. ET

The Cleveland Indians activated designated hitter Travis Hafner from the 15-day disabled list before their series finale against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Hafner, who had been out since Aug. 21 with a strained right foot, is in the starting lineup, batting fourth.

It was initially thought Hafner would undergo season-ending surgery, but he received ''encouraging news'' from doctors on Aug. 31 and started a running program earlier this week. After running the bases to the satisfaction of the coaching staff on Saturday, the team decided to activate him.

Hafner is hitting .281 with 11 homers and 49 RBIs in 82 games this season. The Indians are in third place in the AL Central, 11 games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers.
