Just like the rest of the baseball world, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was shocked to learn that Kirk Gibson was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

“He's always been up for a challenge,” Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “You never want to see anybody have to meet this challenge.”

Hurdle went on to say that he planned to reach out to Gibson.

Gibson, the former professional player and manager, released the following statement.

“With the support of family and friends, I will meet this challenge with the same determination and unwavering intensity that I have displayed in all of my endeavors in life. I look forward to being back at the ballpark as soon as possible.”
