Hernandez, Seinfeld to call Mets game

Jerry Seinfeld will call a New York Mets game with former man-crush Keith Hernandez, 18 years after they paired for a classic "Seinfeld" episode, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Seinfeld, a diehard Mets fan, will join former Amazin's star Hernandez, now a SportsNet New York (SNY) analyst, and play-by-play man Gary Cohen in the booth for at least three innings during  Wednesday's Mets-Tigers game.

It will be Seinfeld's first visit to the SNY booth and the first time he and Hernandez have talked about the famous 1992 "Seinfeld" episode titled "The Boyfriend." The episode featured Keith asking gym-pal Jerry to help him move out of his apartment, and being accused by Kramer and Newman of spitting on them after his error at first base cost the Mets a game.

"That was a baptism under fire," Hernandez said of his "Seinfeld" gig. "I think there's always the fear of the unknown ... and I was terrified, to be honest. I have a very hard time watching that episode, period. I've only seen it once or twice. Let's be realistic — I'm not Marlon Brando, and I never took acting lessons. I'm just glad I memorized my lines and didn't throw off the production."

Seinfeld's visit to the SNY booth was a Father's Day gift from his wife, Jessica, who passed her request on to SNY anchor Gary Apple.

"Jerry is scheduled for the top of the third inning, for at least three innings, and more if he wants to do more. ... There's no set script," said Curt Gowdy Jr., SNY's vice president of production.

SNY plans to screen some clips from "The Boyfriend" episode during Seinfeld's visit and let Seinfeld and Hernandez talk about it.

"I'm always better off-the-cuff and I think this will be fun," Hernandez said. "I have lots of questions regarding that episode. And I'll also talk to Jerry about his being a Mets fan forever and find out who his favorite player is."
