With their first round pick, the 18th overall, the Giants selected right-handed pitcher Phil Bickford from the College of Southern Nevada in the 2015 MLB Draft.
Giants beat writer Chris Haft writes:
Bickford, rated the Draft's No. 21 prospect by MLB.com, posted a 9-1 record with a 1.45 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 86 2/3 innings this year. That performance earned him Scenic West Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year honors. He was on the 60-man midseason "watch list" for the Golden Spikes Award, emblematic of the nation's top collegiate player.

The Giants have a recent history of picking pitchers for their top pick in the Draft. Last year the team selected Tyler Beede from Vanderbilt and Chris Stratton from Mississippi State in 2012. Taking a pitcher in the first round paid off big for the Giants in 2006 when they selected Tim Lincecum and again in 2007 with the selection of Madison Bumgarner.
