Giants' Sandoval, Zito set for rehab assignments

Published Jun. 3, 2011 12:32 a.m. ET

San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is set to begin a rehabilitation assignment on Friday and the team expects pitcher Barry Zito to start his minor league stint early next week.

Sandoval has been on the disabled list while recovering from surgery on his right wrist. Manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that Sandoval would play six innings at Class-A San Jose in his first game, then play the next day for the California League team.

After that, he'll play a few more games at Triple-A Fresno.

Bochy said the switch-hitting Sandoval has looked good swinging from both sides the last two days, and estimated Sandoval would need four or five games in the minors to get his timing.

Sandoval is hitting .313 with five homers and 14 RBIs in 24 games.

Zito, 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in three starts, has been out since mid-April with a sprained right foot he injured while making a diving catch on a bunt popup. He's set to start his rehab assignment Monday at San Jose.
