Giants acquire Royals OF Guillen

Published Aug. 13, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The San Francisco Giants, preparing for their biggest series of the season, have made a significant acquisition.

The team is announced a trade for Kansas City Royals outfielder Jose Guillen hours before the start of their three-game set against the Padres on Friday.

A rival executive who had spoken to one of the clubs said on early Friday morning that the deal was “done,” and a second major-league source confirmed that assessment. ESPN Deportes first reported that a trade was close.

The Royals are expected to pay a significant portion of the $3.39 million that Guillen is owed for the rest of the season. The Royals will receive a player to be named later in return. The player is possibly a major leaguer that would have to clear waivers.

Guillen, designated for assignment by the Royals last week, would give the Giants an additional right-handed hitter and perhaps enable the team to return Aubrey Huff from right field to first base on occasion — though Guillen has played sparingly in right this season, serving mostly as a DH.

His arrival would jeopardize the roster spot of outfielder Nate Schierholtz, who is out of options and conceivably could be included in the trade. Schierholtz, a left-handed hitter, has batted only .194 in 134 at-bats since May 6.

Guillen, in the final year of a three-year, $36 million contract, batted .255/.314/.429 for the Royals with 16 homers in 396 at-bats.
