Georgia State reportedly wins bid to buy Turner Field after Braves' relocation

The Atlanta Braves are scheduled to play their last season at Turner Field in downtown Atlanta in 2016 with their new stadium in nearby Cobb County due to be completed in time for the 2017 season.
Monday, it was announced Georgia State had won the bidding for the baseball park, planning to convert it to the university's new football stadium, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Turner Field sits less than two miles from the campus.
Along with converting Turner Field to a football venue, Georgia State plans to develop student housing, apartments, retail space and a baseball stadium at the location. The estimated cost is $300 million for the project.
The Panthers' football team currently shares the Georgia Dome with the Atlanta Falcons, but with their own stadium -- along with school's first bowl appearance this season -- Georgia State sees a bright future for the future of the program.
Turner Field has been the Braves' home since 1997. It was originally built as Centennial Olympic Stadium in 1996 as the centerpiece of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and, as planned, was converted to the baseball park prior to the 1997 season.
