Estrada flirts with no-hitter, Blue Jays beat Orioles 5-4

TORONTO (AP) Marco Estrada's brilliant start overshadowed the latest round of bad blood between the Blue Jays and Orioles.

Estrada took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, Edwin Encarnacion had two RBIs and Toronto won its ninth straight home game Friday night, beating Baltimore 5-4.

''He had everything working,'' Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Estrada.

Batting for Steve Pearce, pinch-hitter Jimmy Paredes broke up Estrada's no-hit bid with a bloop single to left to begin the eighth, ending a streak of 15 straight outs.

Bench coach DeMarlo Hale, filling in for the ejected Gibbons, immediately came out and replaced Estrada with Roberto Osuna. Estrada, who threw a season-high 118 pitches, left to a standing ovation from the crowd of 32.322.

''I wanted to keep going,'' Estrada said. ''If I had to throw 200 pitches today, I would have.''

Estrada (5-3) won his fourth straight start, allowing one run in seven-plus innings. He walked four and struck out six.

''We knew the changeup was a big pitch for him,'' Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. ''He's got great arm speed on it. It's one of those that you can know it's coming and still not get a good pass at it.''

Dave Stieb still has thrown the only no-hitter in Blue Jays history, doing it against Cleveland on Sept. 2, 1990.

Adam Jones hit a two-out, two-run single off Brett Cecil in the ninth, but Cecil struck out Chris Davis for his fifth save.

The nine-game streak is Toronto's longest run at home since 1998, when they also won nine. The Blue Jays won a record 10 straight at home in 1985.

The Blue Jays and Orioles, AL East rivals who have feuded several times in recent seasons, wasted no time in turning up the tension.

Toronto's Jose Bautista was hit by a pitch in the first and Gibbons was ejected for arguing after both benches were warned.

Orioles right-hander Mike Wright (2-3) brushed Bautista back with an 0-1 pitch, prompting warnings from plate umpire CB Bucknor. Gibbons came out and was ejected before engaging in a lengthy discussion with crew chief Dale Scott.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter came out at the end of the first to speak with Bucknor, but was not ejected.

Osuna and Hale were ejected after Osuna hit Jones to load the bases with one out in the eighth.

Gibbons said he was ''a little bit shocked'' at the spate of ejections.

''There was a little paranoia or something there,'' he said.

Bautista has a history with Orioles reliever Darren O'Day dating to 2013, but several different incidents have fueled the rivalry. The most recent came in an April 21 game at Toronto when Bautista argued with Jones after Orioles rookie Jason Garcia threw behind the Blue Jays slugger.

Bautista, who traded words with Baltimore's dugout after being hit, didn't bite when asked how he felt about the incident.

''I'm not going to contribute to turn this into TMZ or a gossip column,'' he said.

Jones wasn't too bothered about being hit, but did say the warnings might have been premature.

''I wasn't too happy when the warnings came out immediately,'' Jones said. ''The umpires are trying to get a hold of the game. I understand it.''

Wright lost his third straight start, giving up four runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings, his shortest start of the season.

''I feel like my last three outings have been a battle,'' Wright said. ''I've got to figure some stuff out to give my team a chance.''

DICKEY'S HEAVY HEART

Toronto placed RHP R.A. Dickey on the bereavement list following his father's death. Harry Lee Dickey died Tuesday at 63. Dickey went 7 1/3 innings and allowed one run in Toronto's 7-1 home victory Thursday night over the New York Mets. He's expected to make his next start, Tuesday at Tampa Bay. The Blue Jays recalled INF Munenori Kawasaki to take Dickey's spot.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Orioles: Jones returned as DH after missing three games with a sore right shoulder. He's expected to play the outfield Saturday. ... 2B Jonathan Schoop (right knee) went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in his first rehab game at Double-A Bowie.

UP NEXT

Orioles: RHP Kevin Gausman is expected to be activated from the 15-day DL to start Saturday. It will be the first start of the season for Gausman, who made eight relief appearances before landing on the DL with a sore shoulder. He went 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three rehab starts.

Blue Jays: LHP Mark Buehrle is 3-0 with a 3.50 ERA in three starts against the Orioles this season. However, he's gone 1-3 with a 4.67 ERA in day games. Buehrle's lone daytime victory came April 10 at Baltimore, his 200th career win.
