Elderly usher hit by ball at Red Sox batting practice

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:19 p.m. ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) An elderly male usher has been struck by a batted ball from Hanley Ramirez, prompting the Boston Red Sox to halt batting practice at spring training.

The usher was conscious and immediately tended to by Boston's trainers and medical personnel Monday before being carted off on a stretcher by EMTs. He appeared to be fine when he left.

The man was hit in the upper body. Ramirez, David Ortiz and manager John Farrell walked up into the left-field stands to check on him.

Last season, a number of fans across the majors were hit by batted balls, prompting Major League Baseball to recommend that teams extend screens from home plate to the dugouts.
