Duquette on Chen demotion: Business as usual

Published Jun. 18, 2015 10:47 p.m. ET

The Baltimore Orioles made news earlier this week by demoting Wei-Yin Chen to the minors, a move that agent Scott Boras called "grossly irregular."

General manager Dan Duquette defended the move on Sirius/XM today, saying the actions were “consistent with how we’ve managed our pitching staff the last couple of years.”

Duquette added the Orioles have, in cases, skipped pitchers a turn or kept them out of the rotation for “a short period of time” if they were out of minor league options. He cited examples where starters Bud Norris, Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman and Miguel Gonzales had all been sent down when they had options and the team needed the roster space.

He will re-join the team 10 days after his demotion, but this saga is far from over.
