Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew has undergone surgery to repair his fractured right ankle and related ligament damage.

Dr. Peter Mitchell said in a statement released by the team that he performed ''internal plating to the fibula bone'' on Thursday as well repairing the ligaments.

Drew was injured sliding into home plate against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night when his cleats caught in the ground and his ankle twisted awkwardly beneath him.

Mitchell said the operation went as expected and he is optimistic Drew will make a full recovery.
