De La Rosa named opening day starter Rockies beat Reds 7-6

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) Jorge De La Rosa gave up Brandon Phillips first spring home run, but manager Walt Weiss named him the opening day starter after the Colorado Rockies 7-6 win over the Reds on Friday.

De La Rosa pitched six innings, the longest by any Rockies pitcher this spring. He allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out three.

''He pitched with a lot of nagging injuries over the last few years,'' Weiss said. ''He is going out there very healthy right now. It's a good sign. He was very efficient 79 pitches through six innings. It was a good test. We got him stretched out a little bit.''

De La Rosa will start against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix on April 4.

Phillips missed a game with a stiff neck Tuesday but started the Reds scoring with a home run, leading off the second inning.

Minor leaguer Pat Valaika hit a three-run home run off Reds starter Raisel Iglesias, who pitched three innings. Christian Adames hit a two-run homer off Pedro Villarreal.

''Iglesias' stuff was good. The first inning was indicative of it,'' said Reds' manager Bryan Price, who brought the infield in after Adames tripled to open the game. ''He got a soft ground ball from Cargo (Carlos Gonzalez). He made good pitches to get out of the jam. You do that in spring training to put them in a situation that they have to make pitches. I wouldn't have brought the infield in on Gonzalez in the first inning of a normal game.''

Iglesias started throwing late in spring. He was shut down in early September with shoulder fatigue. The Reds have three potential starters unable to begin the season.

''I just want to make sure I have five guys that are stretched out. I'm still not sure who those five guys are,'' Price said.

Tucker Barnhart had two doubles, including one that scored Jay Bruce. Zack Cozart had two hits and a walk.

Tony Wolters and Rafael Ynoa had two hits each for the Rockies.

Ramon Cabrera and Bryson Smith homered off Miguel Castro in the ninth.

STARTING TIME

Rockies: De La Rosa made his fourth start and is the first Rockies pitcher to go six innings. He has 17 2/3 innings this spring. De La Rosa has given up 10 runs on 22 hits.

Reds: Iglesias pitched his first game on March 14 and made his third start. He's pitched six for the spring, allowing six runs, five earned, in six innings.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Rockies: RHP Jon Gray will probably miss two weeks with a strained abdominal muscle. ... LHP Tyler Anderson is progressing from a strained right oblique and is a couple days from resuming his throwing program.

Reds: RHP Jon Moscot hasn't pitched since March 11 with a strained right rib cage. Moscot, who was one of the candidates for the starting rotation when camp opened, threw a bullpen without pain on Friday. It is being decided if he will get a start on Monday.

Rockies: LHP Chris Rusin is scheduled to pitch against the Rangers.

Reds: The Reds have a split-squad day. RHP Tim Melville will pitch against the Indians at home. LHP Brandon Finnegan will pitch on the road against the White Sox.

ROSTER MOVES

The Rockies optioned RHP David Hale Triple A Albuquerque. They re-assigned INF/C Ryan Casteel, RHP Nelson Gonzalez, RHP Brock Huntzinger, OF Kyle Parker and OF Mike Tauchman to minor league camp.
