Cubs pull Soto and Johnson amid trade speculation

Published Jul. 31, 2012 12:51 a.m. ET

Cubs catcher Geovany Soto and outfielder Reed Johnson were pulled in the middle of Monday night's game and hugged teammates in the dugout, prompting speculation they had been traded.

There was no confirmation by Chicago after its 14-4 win over Pittsburgh that any deals had been made. Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he'd been told to take out Soto and Johnson, but offered no other details.

There was talk the Cubs were speaking to Texas about a deal for Soto, and discussing a swap to send Johnson and pitcher Paul Maholm to Atlanta.

The Braves and Texas said they had no trades to report.

Tuesday afternoon is the deadline for teams to make trades without waivers. Cubs ace Ryan Dempster has attracted interest from several clubs.
