Cards sign Hill to minor-league deal

The St. Louis Cardinals have added catching depth behind three-time All-Star Yadier Molina, agreeing to a minor-league contract with longtime Chicago Cubs backup Koyie Hill, a source told FOXSports.com.

The Cubs non-tendered Hill, 32, after he batted .194 in 46 games last year. Hill’s contract with St. Louis calls for a $750,000 base salary if he makes the big-league club.

Hill, a career .211 hitter, is valued mostly for his contributions behind the plate. The Cubs went 106-88 in his starts from 2007 through 2011. Hill’s veteran presence and knowledge of the National League Central likely would be valued by new Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

Other than Molina, the Cardinals have two catchers on their 40-man roster: Tony Cruz, who has caught 20 games in the major leagues, and Bryan Anderson, who has caught eight.
