Cardinals sign Carpenter to six-year, $52 million deal

The Cardinals have locked up third baseman Matt Carpenter, signing him to a six-year deal worth $52 million, FOX Sports 1 MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal reports.

The deal includes an $18.5 million club option for the 2020 season.

Carpenter played his second full season in 2013, batting .318 with 11 homers and 78 RBI, helping the Cardinals reach the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

Carpenter struggled in the divisional series against the Pirates, going 1 for 19, but batted .296 in the World Series, which the Cardinals lost to the Red Sox in six games.
