Braves CF Schafer fouls bunt off face, leaves game

Published Jun. 4, 2011 1:58 a.m. ET

Atlanta Braves rookie Jordan Schafer fouled a bunt off his face in a scary scene Friday night and was taken to a hospital for X-rays.

The Braves said Schafer was hit around his upper lip and nose. He left the game against the New York Mets in the fifth inning with a towel pressed tight to the right side of his face.

The Atlanta leadoff man opened the fifth by squaring around to bunt. Jonathon Niese's pitch tailed in toward Schafer, and the ball deflected off his bat and squarely hit him.

Schafer was down for about a minute as a Braves trainer attended to him. The Atlanta center fielder was assisted toward the dugout. Eric Hinske took over the at-bat and struck out.
