Blue Jays put 2B Hill on DL with injured hamstring

Published Apr. 13, 2010 3:19 a.m. ET

The Toronto Blue Jays placed second baseman Aaron Hill on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a tender right hamstring and brought up outfielder Jeremy Reed from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Manager Cito Gaston said the team wants to be cautious with the All-Star infielder. John McDonald and Mike McCoy will share duties at second until Hill returns.

``I know I can play,'' Hill said. ``That's what I told them. That was the first thing I said: 'I know I can play.' But the bottom line is, it's not playing at a speed that I know would benefit myself or the team.''

Hill said he ran the bases before Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox, fielding ground balls and testing out the new artificial turf installed at the Rogers Centre.

The DL move was made retroactive to April 8.

``I mean, if you had five or six days left in the season, you'd probably wrap it up and nurse it and get him through it,'' Gaston said. ``But to play another six months with it? It's a little bit tough.''

McDonald started at second against the White Sox.
