The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed third baseman Shawn Bowman on waivers from the New York Mets.

Bowman is a 25-year-old native of British Columbia. He spent last season with Binghamton of the Eastern League and hit .294 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs.

Bowman played in 12 spring training games for the Mets this year before being designated for assignment. He was a member of the Canadian team at the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not appear in a game.

The Blue Jays optioned his contract to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.
