Bautista blooming in Dickey's pants

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was mired in a terrible slump coming into Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, having gone 8 for 62 over his previous 15 games, dropping his batting average from .270 to .245 in the process.

Over the weekend, however, the 2010 and 2011 Major League home run king broke out, going 5 for 9 with 3 home runs and 4 RBI in two games.

The difference? R.A. Dickey’s pants, of course.

According to the Toronto Star, Bautista borrowed Dickey’s pants for Saturday’s game and wore them up around his knees, in the same fashion as the Jays’ knuckleball-hurling ace. He also switched to a two-tone bat, according to the Boston Globe.

Far be it from me to tell a guy that another guy’s pants can’t be a good luck charm — I mean, at least it’s not a gold thong — especially when it’s so hard to argue with the results:

The Blue Jays returned to Toronto after the Red Sox series, and the luck has carried over at home. Bautista went 1 for 2 with a double and reached base three times in Monday’s 8-3 win over the Tigers.

Afterward, he declared that he'd be rocking " Dickey’s pants until further notice."

Bautista followed it up by reaching base four times, going 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI in Tuesday's 7-6 loss. He is hitting .615 in four games since getting in Dickey’s pants, with an on-base percentage of .722. His batting average now sits at .261 for the season.
