Bauer stops White Sox streak, pitches Indians to 3-1 win

CHICAGO (AP) Trevor Bauer just seems to be able to cool off the White Sox this season no matter what.

Bauer pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning for his third straight solid outing against the White Sox, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night that snapped Chicago's season-high six-game winning streak.

''I think I've just happened to run into them when I feel good, when I execute well,'' Bauer said. ''When you execute well you have a good chance to beat anybody.

''When you don't, anybody can beat you.''

Brandon Moss homered for Cleveland. Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez each drove in a run.

Bauer (3-1) continued his mastery of the White Sox, retiring his first 11 batters. He allowed one run and struck out seven in 7 1-3 innings.

The right-hander improved to 2-0 against the White Sox this season. He has permitted just three runs and 12 hits while striking out 22 in 20 1-3 innings against them.

This time, he throttled the White Sox on a 50-degree night.

''I'll tell you what: (Bauer) was good,'' Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. ''He had a real good breaking ball and in this cold weather, I thought that was something. He made them respect all his pitches and he competed.''

Chicago starter Jose Quintana (2-4) gave up two runs in seven innings, scattering eight hits and four walks.

Avisail Garcia had an RBI single for the White Sox.

''(Quintana) was great, (Bauer) was tough as well,'' Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. ''They just scratched across a couple more than we did.

''So good pitching, you're going to run into this where you're going to have to scratch and get something out of it.''

Cody Allen retired all four batters he faced - striking out three - to earn his seventh save in eight attempts.

Bauer got his first win since April 15, a 4-2 victory over Chicago in his second start of the season. He also followed up a terrific start against St. Louis last Thursday when he allowed one run and four hits while striking out 10 in 7 1-3 innings.

''I feel a bit better mechanically and I'm probably back to where I need to be,'' Bauer said. ''I also feel better attacking guys.''

After hitting a leadoff triple over Garcia's head, Jason Kipnis scored on Brantley's sacrifice fly to put Cleveland ahead.

With two outs in the fourth, Jose Abreu drove a ground-rule double to center. Following a walk to Adam LaRoche, Abreu scored on Garcia's single to tie it.

Bauer then walked the based loaded, but escaped by striking out Alexei Ramirez.

''He got himself into a bind in the one inning, but he pitched his way out of it,'' Francona said. ''And because there wasn't really a lot of high-pitch innings, he was able to pitch deep into the game.''

Kipnis scored a second time to put Cleveland ahead 2-1 with two outs in the fifth on Jose Ramirez's double to the left-field corner.

Moss hit a solo homer off reliever Zach Putnam in the eighth to make it 3-1.

After pulling Bauer, Francona used three relievers to close out the eighth with Chicago runners on first and second.

Indians: 1B Carlos Santana (back spasms) didn't start again, but Francona said Santana was ''much improved'' and hoped he would be available off the bench. ... C Yan Gomes (left knee) continues to make progress rehabbing at Triple-A Columbus. He was slated to catch seven innings on Wednesday and DH on Thursday. ''He is really close,'' Francona said. ''He's kind of in attack mode, which is exciting.''

White Sox: Garcia was back in right field after leaving Monday's game in the 10th inning with right knee inflammation. Garcia said the condition was not serious, and he is managing it with ice and medication. ''Everything's fine,'' Garcia said. ''It's not normal, but it's nothing to worry about. That's going to happen in sports.''

STILL STREAKING

Abreu extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

ROAD WARRIOR

When Abreu scored in the fourth, it was the first run Bauer allowed on the road this season, ending his streak of 16 scoreless innings away from home. That was the fourth-longest road scoreless streak from the beginning of a season by a Cleveland starter since 1914.

LHP Carlos Rodon (1-0, 4.96 ERA), rated the No. 1 prospect in the White Sox organization, makes his third start and sixth appearance of the season when he faces Indians RHP Shaun Marcum (0-0, 1.80) on Wednesday night in the third game of the four-game series.
