Astros still seeking fifth starter consistency

Published May. 15, 2015 9:49 a.m. ET

At 22-13 going into play Friday, the Houston Astros are off to such a strong start that it may be hard to identify any glaring weaknesses.

However, the inconsistency and lack of a reliable fifth starter is one area with which the club is looking to make an improvement.

Lefty Brett Oberholtzer made a start on Wednesday but was sent back on the 15-day disabled list due to an ongoing blister issue. In his place, youngster Jake Buchanan was called up and could find himself in Oberholtzer's rotation spot by Monday - but that's still not really satisfying the desire for rotation stability.

Manager A.J. Hinch told Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle that this is definitely something the Astros want to fix soon:

“It hasn’t been a great spot for us,” Hinch said. “We’ve actually won some games out of that spot, but a little bit of bad luck with Obie’s finger. Deduno’s had a couple different opportunities. Wojo (Asher Wojciechowski) had a couple different opportunities. In a lot of years, it’s not uncommon to have multiple guys in that spot. You know, we want to keep guys healthy and keep guys good. I mean, our rotation for the most part has been pretty good. “We’d like somebody to solidify that in the next month.”
