Astros' Schafer goes on DL with shoulder injury

Published Aug. 7, 2012 8:09 p.m. ET

The Astros have placed center fielder Jordan Schafer on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury.

Schafer begin having problems with his shoulder this weekend and doctors determined he has a separation of the AC joint in his left shoulder.

The Astros selected the contract of outfielder Brandon Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his spot. Barnes, a 26-year-old who was drafted in 2005, had never played in the majors.

Schafer, who was acquired from Atlanta last summer in the trade for Michael Bourn, is hitting .216 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 96 games. His 26 stolen bases are tied for sixth in the National League.
