AP Source: Steverson to be White Sox batting coach

Published Oct. 25, 2013 5:19 p.m. ET

A person familiar with the situation says Oakland Athletics minor league hitting coordinator Todd Steverson is set to become the batting coach for the Chicago White Sox.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the hiring has not been announced.

Steverson replaces Jeff Manto, who was fired after two seasons. He'll be working with a team that batted .249 and had its home run total drop from third in the majors at 211 a year ago to 19th this season at 148. The White Sox have since agreed to a contract with Cuban slugger Jose Abreu, hoping he can add pop to the order.

Steverson has major league experience as a first base coach with the Athletics and has coached and managed in their system since joining the organization in 2004.
