Angels' Howie Kendrick injures leg

Los Angeles Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick was helped off the field Monday night after hyperextending his left knee while chasing a popup in the outfield.

Kendrick was hurt in the fifth inning of the Angels' game against the Texas Rangers when he sprinted into right field to catch Elvis Andrus' tailing popup with two runners in scoring position.

Right fielder Colin Cowgill also came forward and slid toward the ball. Kendrick still attempted to make the play and bent his left leg awkwardly while trying to avoid Cowgill, losing the ball from his glove.

The Angels' medical staff eventually helped Kendrick off the field, but he appeared to be putting some weight on his leg.

One inning later, the Angels announced Kendrick had hyperextended his knee.

Kendrick began the night batting .302 with 11 homers and 47 RBIs. He has been a valuable offensive contributor with the absence of injured first baseman Albert Pujols and the season-long struggles of outfielder Josh Hamilton.
