Angels 9, Padres 6

First, it was Torii Hunter who homered. Next pitch, Vernon Wells.

The Los Angeles Angels have some proven power in the middle of their lineup and it showed on Tuesday.

Hunter and Wells connected on consecutive pitches to start the fourth inning and Los Angeles went deep four times in a 9-6 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Mark Trumbo added a two-run shot in the fourth - his fifth homer of the spring. Brandon Wood connected in the sixth.

Bobby Abreu had a two-run double for the Angels in the third.

''We took some real good swings,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. ''All the home runs were hit well. That's a good sign.''

Ryan Ludwick and Eric Patterson each hit a two-run homer for San Diego.

Padres starter Wade LeBlanc was tagged for seven hits and six runs over five innings. He is 0-2 with a 9.22 ERA this spring.

Though his stat line didn't show it, LeBlanc said he felt had his ''best stuff since July.''

''I feel like I threw the ball well,'' he said. ''I felt I had good stuff and good command. I made one mistake on a changeup to Wells. I got a fastball in on Hunter, and he did a good job getting to it. I threw an 0-2 change to Trumbo, and it wasn't bad. But I should have buried it.''

Angels starter Joel Pineiro gave up eight hits and four runs in four innings.

''I had all-right stuff,'' Pineiro said. ''I threw more off-speed stuff than normal. Overall, it wasn't bad, but I need to get my slider and changeup ready for the season.''

Padres catcher Nick Hundley had a pair of doubles and left fielder Chris Denorfia had three hits, including a double.

''LeBlanc threw fine, but he got some balls elevated to power hitters,'' Padres manager Bud Black. ''He has to execute the fastball in. When he misses, he has to miss off the plate.''

NOTES: The Padres are off Wednesday, but Mat Latos will throw 75-80 pitches against a group of minor leaguers.
