A-Rod drops Boras as agent

Published Sep. 2, 2010 8:59 p.m. ET

Alex Rodriguez’s business relationship with Scott Boras is effectively over.

Rodriguez has dropped Boras as his baseball agent, though the players’ union continues to list Boras as A-Rod’s representative.

The New York Yankees slugger said Friday that he and Boras had "a good run," but he no longer needs some of the things he needed 20 years ago.

Rodriguez, the Yankees’ third baseman, currently is operating without a baseball agent, sources say. He doesn’t need one; his contract runs through 2017.

His split with Boras developed “organically” after the two engaged in a dispute over the announcement during the 2007 World Series that A-Rod was opting out of his contract, according to a source close to Rodriguez.

Instead, Rodriguez is using different attorneys for different purposes. Jay Reisinger, a Pittsburgh-based attorney, represented Rodriguez in Major League Baseball’s investigation into his use of performance-enhancing drugs in 2009.

Reisinger and another attorney, Washington D.C.-based Jim Sharp, also have advised Rodriguez about the federal investigation of Dr. Anthony Galea, a Canadian who has been charged with smuggling human growth hormone into the U.S. The government has sought to talk to Rodriguez about his relationship with Galea.

Rodriguez also retains attorneys who advise him on property, marital and even entertainment matters, sources say.

USA Today first reported his split with Boras. Rodriguez declined comment at Yankee Stadium before the Yankees-A's game on Thursday.

Boras did not return text messages seeking comment.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
