Miguel Cabrera finally homered!
The Detroit third baseman hit his first homer since Aug. 26, connecting for a solo blast against Seattle in the sixth inning of the Tigers' 6-2 victory at Comerica Park on Tuesday.
But the 2012 American League MVP failed to homer in either of his next two games.
With nine regular-season games remaining for the Tigers, Cabrera leads the AL — and the majors — in batting average, is tied for the RBI lead and trails Baltimore's Chris Davis by seven homers, 51-44.
The numbers don't bode well for Cabrera, who had a chance to become the first player to win Triple Crowns in back-to-back seasons. When September started, he was right there, but his recent slump — helped by a nagging groin injury — has slowed down the 30-year-old Venezuelan.
Davis, who trailed by as many 12 RBI on Aug. 26, managed to catch Cabrera and tie for the lead in the category with two RBI in a 1-for-6 performance in the Orioles' 5-3, 12-inning win at Boston on Wednesday. The 134 RBI are a career-best for Davis, whose previous high was 85 last season — as was his 33 homers.
Last fall Cabrera became the first major leaguer to win a Triple Crown since 1967, when Carl Yastrzemski did so with the Boston Red Sox.
Unfortunately for opposing pitchers, Cabrera hasn't slowed down — until this recent slump. He tied his homer output from last season and is closing in on reaching his RBI total (139) from 2012.
In the race for the AL batting title, Davis isn't a threat to Cabrera. Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout is second, .017 points back at .330 after a 1-for-5 outing in the Angels' 5-4, 10-inning victory at Oakland on Wednesday afternoon.
