UPDATE: Thompson has concussion after taking knee to head from Ariza

Published May. 28, 2015 12:07 a.m. ET

UPDATE: Golden State guard Klay Thompson has a concussion after getting kneed in the side of the head by Houston's Trevor Ariza.

Thompson was injured after he faked a shot and Ariza knocked him to the floor with a knee to the head in the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Wednesday night.

Thompson received stitches in his right ear and passed a concussion test during the game that would have allowed him to return. The Warriors did not need him as they won the game 104-90 to clinch the series.

The Warriors said Thompson developed concussion symptoms after the game and will be evaluated by the medical staff. Thompson must pass the concussion protocol before he can return to play. The NBA Finals start June 4.

The Golden State Warriors took care of the Houston Rockets and emerged victorious in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals on Wednesday night, but not without another scare for the Splash Brothers, courtesy of Trevor Ariza.

Klay Thompson was involved in a scary moment in the fourth quarter. After executing a pump fake to get Ariza in the air, he took a knee to the back of his head.

The right ear laceration he received didn’t keep Thompson out of the game for long, though. Thompson, who finished with 20 points, lay on the ground for a minute before walking to the locker room. He came back to the bench after receiving stitches on his right ear.

The Warriors said he could've returned, but they never needed him. Thompson told ESPN's Doris Burke he’d be all right during a postgame interview on the court.

Stephen Curry took a scary fall over Ariza and exited Game 4, although he did return. The league’s MVP struggled on Wednesday, draining only 7 of 21 shots, but said he'd shaken off the effects of the fall. The MVP wore a protective yellow sleeve on his right arm, which he shed in the third quarter after shooting 4 for 12 and the Warriors clinging to a 52-46 halftime lead.

The Warriors will get a week to heal before they take on the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on June 4.
