Report: Tyler Johnson expected back for training camp after broken jaw
There are a myriad of injuries one can suffer on a basketball court. An NBA game, even just a summer league contest, is an incredibly physical affair. This is absolutely a contact sport. And if you don't believe it, just ask Miami Heat guard Tyler Johnson, who suffered a broken jaw during the Orlando summer league earlier this month.
Unfortunately for Johnson, that major injury meant he wasn't able to show off his development for Miami in the team's various summer leagues. But the good news is that summer league coach and Heat assistant Dan Craig said that Johnson should be back and healthy in time for Miami's training camp (via the Palm Beach Post):
"From what I’ve heard from the trainers, he’s doing really well," Craig said. "He’s back in good spirits. Pain-wise, it’s nothing over the top. He was actually eating some solid foods. Back in the old days you’d have your jaw wired shut in his case, but they have a procedure where they don’t need to do that with him."
Not having your jaw wired shut: The upside to breaking your jaw under the current medical regime. It's a brave new world of injuries, with such procedures in it.
Now, here's hoping that Johnson heals up to 100 percent as quickly as possible so that he can get a fair shake at training camp. Miami's roster is loaded, particularly on the wings. But at least the second-year Johnson will be back in time to compete.
