Yankees say 18-year-old minor leaguer was killed in car crash

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 9:12 p.m. ET

The New York Yankees held a moment of silence before their game Sunday for Sandy Acevedo, an 18-year-old minor leaguer who was set to start his pro career in 2016.

The team said Acevedo was killed in a car crash in the Dominican Republic on Saturday. Acevedo, an infielder who was born in the Dominican Republic and lived in Santo Domingo, was signed by the team as an international free agent last July and was expected to make his professional debut in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.
