Yankees place Johnson on 15-day DL

Published May. 8, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The New York Yankees have placed Nick Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with a right wrist injury.

The designated hitter left Friday night's win over the Boston Red Sox for pinch hitter Marcus Thames in the fifth inning. Johnson had a sore right wrist that he said caused him pain when he batted in the first inning. He returned to New York for tests on Saturday.

The Yankees called up utility infielder Kevin Russo on Saturday from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, where he was hitting .302.

Robinson Cano, who left Friday's game after being hit on the left knee by Josh Beckett's pitch, was a late addition to the lineup as designated hitter.
